Trading Rules for China A-Shares

Want to invest in China A-shares? Here's what you need to know about how the market works

📅 Trading Hours & Calendar

  • A-shares follow mainland China’s trading calendar.
  • The market is open Monday to Friday, excluding China public holidays.
  • Trading sessions (China Standard Time):

    Morning: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

    Afternoon: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Note: No after-hours or pre-market trading available.

💱 Currency & Settlement

  • Currency: All trades are settled in RMB (Renminbi)
  • Settlement Cycle: T+1 — which means:

Buy Today, Sell Tomorrow (you can’t sell the same shares on the same day)

Funds from selling are also released on T+1

📊 Daily Price Limits

To maintain market stability, A-shares are subject to daily price fluctuation limits:

  • ±10% limit for most listed stocks
  • ±20% limit for STAR Market and ChiNext “newly listed” stocks
  • Trades cannot be executed outside this price band

Day Trading Not Allowed

Unlike US or HK markets, A-shares do not support day trading.
You must hold your shares at least overnight before you’re allowed to sell.

Short Selling Restrictions

  • Short selling is not permitted under China Connect
  • All positions must be long and fully funded

📌 Other Rules to Know

  • Trading Quotas:

    Daily quota limits
apply on the aggregate buy value into China (via China Connect)

If quota is used up, buy orders may be rejected
  • Eligible Stocks Only:

Only specific A-shares are accessible under China Connect

Usually large to mid-cap stocks with sufficient liquidity
  • Order Types Supported:

    Limit Orders Only
    (Market orders not accepted)

No stop-loss or trailing orders supported directly at exchange level

A-shares trading offers valuable access to China’s economy — but it’s important to understand these rules to plan your strategy and avoid rejected orders.
